My granddaughter picked this out for a birthday present. I agreed after reading the reviews that this would work. This unit came in with two right sides and no left side. We had to call and have a new book shelf sent which was a very easy process. The smell is awful. It is a petroleum or polyurethane smell. I am not sure if it is the boxing or the unit. As soon as you enter house you can smell it. I am hoping that it goes away like other reviews say. My husband put it together while I was not home. When I got home I was very disappointed because the back board behind the shelves looks like someone stepped on it. It looks like a shoe print but my husband says it is the grain. I cannot get it off. I have attached a picture of one of the spots. If you put the magnifying zoom on the wood behind shelves on the amazon picture, it looks like beautiful wood grain. I would return it again, but my husband would not want to put together another one. I wish I had kept the other unit until this one was put together so that we could change it out. This ruins the piece for me. I know it won't hopefully be seen after books are in but being a gift, it is very disappointing. The style of it is just as it looks so it is modern looking. I am disappointed with the quality of this bookcase. I prefer wood items rather than particle board. I am hoping this supports the weight of books as stated from other reviewers. There is a very large height space on each shelf if you have something large. It is also a dust magnet. I agree it feels like it is worth $50. I have not been able to attach the screw covers. I don't understand how this has 4 1/2 stars when 20 of the 54 comments are 4 stars or less!I looked around to find something that would match my TV cabinet, and this was the closest I could find that was not absurdly expensive. It also got good reviews as well.Instructions: Like most manually assembled products, they are graphically based. They don't mention important factors. I will explain this shortly.Color: It is not as black as the picture looks. It is a very dark brown. Close enough for me, but if you are looking for a 100% match, you're going to have to go to a brick and mortar company.Assembly: I put together a TV stand/cabinet before assembling this. The stand took me 6-7 hours to do alone. One piece I put in backwards, and didn't realize it until it was too late. A lot of the assembly for the stand used dowels which needed to be glued. Once I realized that I put a piece in backwards, they almost certainly would have been stuck. So I really couldn't do much about it. On top of that, the glass door needed a drilled hole to fit. Thankfully, I was able to drill one myself, and aligned it enough to where it worked.Anyhow, assembling this did require 4 dowels. However, they did not need to be glued(at least no glue came with the product and was not mentioned in the instructions). This took me a little bit over an hour to put together. It would have been shorter, but I put the base shelf backwards, and didn't realize this until I was trying to put on the top. Fortunately, because no glue was used for the 4 dowels, disassembling it took only a few minutes to reverse it. The only part that was a pain, was the last step(putting on the top). Even after realizing my mistake, It took 5-10 minutes or so getting the back to setting into the ridge. Besides those two setbacks, it was simple. I have a lot of information books on it, and it still is very sturdy. It is well worth the price, and assembling yourself.I am very disappointed with this book case. This is not all wood. The sides are some sort of laminate. I figured the backing would be laminate, but not the sides too. Also, this smells awful. After a day, I had to move this to my garage because it was smelling up my house something awful. I am going to assume it is some sort of stain smell that is stronger because of the laminate. I wasted money on this for sure.I will start by saying, take note of the dimensions provided - the picture makes it look much larger than it is. It's really quite small. I knew the dimensions before ordering and still I felt it looked small. The shelf itself is nice and I quite like it. While assembling, I had some doubts...it seemed very flimsy and wobbly and I was concerned...but once I managed to get all the final pieces and screws in, it became much sturdier. Sliding in the back panel, which they have inconveniently provided as 2 individual pieces with a cheap plastic joiner in the middle was a little tricky to accomplish - the shelves end up blocking the grooves they have to slide down, so you almost have to pry it around them...took some time, but once it's done it's all good. Not adding the back panels is not an option, otherwise the thing is SO unstable, even with all the shelves in.Now...the baskets... Absolute garbage. They LOOK really nice...and that's where it ends. When they come out of the plastic, it's all you can do not to toss your cookies all over them. They REEK, they smell like the urine soaked wood shavings in the bottom of a rats cage that hasn't been cleaned EVER. I had to get them the hell out of my house for the stench was killing us all. I will be returning that portion and expect a refund for the difference between baskets and no baskets. Do yourself a favour - get the NO BASKETS version, and just buy your own! Heed my warning, you will regret not listening... I didn't listen to the other reviewer - and boy do I regret it! Caveat Emptor!Do not buy this item. It passes in images as a nice piece of furniture, but it's cheap and poorly built. Edges were scratched out of the box. Wood split during assembly. Big stickers that can't be removed on the back of the back panel of the shelf. Due to its poor design, I was unable to disassemble this item and am currently fighting with Amazon over how to get my refund. I also bought the Winsome Wood Liso End Table/Printer Table and won't even open the box it shipped in. I won't ever buy from this manufacturer again. I'm currently exploring local options. This has been a nightmare. If you want quality, go buy in person where you can see the quality firsthand.L'étagère s'est effondré avec seulement quelques livres. Je ne recommande pas cet article.Perfect addition for pit grandson's room with a connect to wall.Do not buy this product - I cannot stress it enough. It is of very low quality and mine smelled very bad. The terrible smell went through the whole house. I did contact Amazon and was more than pleased with the service I received, but I want to discourage any potential buyers. Please do not waste your time on this item.
